History of East Carolina University

The history of this wonderful college dates back as early as 1901. During when the City of Wilson citizens went to the city of Raleigh, NC to petition the N.C General Assembly for an eastern North Carolina normal college. The delegation wanted a normal college in Wilson but was later denied because of funding rationales. The politicians did not want to take any money away from the State Normal College. However, in February of 1905, Elizabeth City sent 11 citizens to the general assembly to charter a state normal school for the East. This delegation was also a fail but paved the way for the final success in March of 1907.

Finally, in “March 8, 1907, the General Assembly passed an act titled: “AN ACT TO STIMULATE HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF THE STATE AND TEACHER TRAINING”.  When classes began in 1909 the campus has six buildings, including two dormitories. Tuition was free for all students who would plan to teach for 2 years and a “hefty” $45.00 tuition for all other students. The total number of students who attended this first year included 104 women, 19 men, and 11 faculty members. As you could probably imagine, the school has drastically changed since then and has grown to have about 30,000 undergraduate students as of 2016.
