Before we get started talking about which Honda models have VTEC systems, let us take a moment to discuss what VTEC is and why one would want it in their vehicle.
VTEC for Your Honda
At its simplest description, VTEC – or Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control – is a reconfiguration of a four stroke combustion engine to increase volumetric efficiency. This means the engine actively switches between two timing profiles to increase fuel economy. This is different from standard Variable Valve Timing (VVT) in that it does not change the camshaft profile or valve lift at all. The more efficient the engine, the better the gas mileage. Who wouldn’t want that?
Honda Models with VTEC
Now that we have that sorted out, let us get started talking about which Honda models feature VTEC systems.
For Civics the EX, EX-L, HX (6th generation), Si, Si-R, VTi VTiR and Civic Type R (CTR) are VTEC.
For Integras it’s simple: Integra LS/GS/RS/SE = NOT VTEC, unless modified after production (hence someone doing a LS/VTEC conversion), and the Integra GS-R and Integra Type R (ITR for short) are VTEC.
RSX = all models are VTEC actually i-VTEC (intelligent VTEC)
