If you’re looking to “hang out” with some real “party animals” this summer, then take a day trip to the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, NC. You’ll find the world’s largest and most diverse collection of Lemurs at this facility (unless you want to make the 11,000 mile trip to Madagascar).
According to their website, the Duke Lemur Center “advances science, scholarship, and biological conservation through interdisciplinary research, community-based conservation, and public outreach.” One thing they didn’t mention is that these creatures, while slightly mysterious, are tons of fun to observe and learn about!
Tours, Education Programs & More
The Duke Lemur Center is open year-round for visitors from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. In addition, there are several different types of guided tours offered. There are public and private tour options available that can be catered to a wide variety of ages, interest levels, and budgets. Reservations are required for all tours and must be made in advance of your visit.
The DLC also offers educational programs such as Lemur Learning Labs and the Lemur Learning Homeschool Academy. The latter option is a great supplement to any home schooled child’s curriculum and includes “a series of four interconnected, in-depth inquiries into topics including primatology, husbandry, training, conservation, environmental stewardship, research and writing designed especially for the middle school-aged home-scholar,” according to the Duke Lemur Center’s website.
Grab a Unique Gift at the Lemur Landing Gift Shop
If you’re looking for a truly unique gift to commemorate your visit to the Duke Lemur Center, you’ll find it at the Lemur Landing Gift Shop. You can take your pick from items like lemur stuffies, paintings made by lemurs, Madagascar vanilla, stationery, and native Malagasy products.
Best of all, the purchases from the gift shop help fund the center and the care of the lemurs including their housing and veterinary supplies.
Volunteer Opportunities
Visiting the Duke Lemur Center is one thing, but when you become a part of the working processes, you really become engaged with the lemurs. That’s why the DLC offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities for students and the general public. Consider becoming a part of the DLC on a more in-depth basis and help the center continue to thrive in the future.
