Learn About North Carolina in the Great War

Great War Soldier

It’s time for the 100th anniversary of World War I, and the Joyner Library has decided to celebrate with two exhibits. Both focus on North Carolina’s role in the war and will be on display through March 25. Head over to the library to catch them before they’re gone.

Get the details and you’ll see why these exhibits are worth the trip to the library.

NC First World War

The first of the exhibits is titled NC First World War. This exhibit is located in the Janice Hardison Faulkner Gallery. It contains various artifacts related to the United States’ involvement in the brutal war. You will also see letters and mementos belonging to Dorothy Repiton Knox. Her World War I scrapbook is famous, and you will see why when you look at some of the excerpts in person. You will explore the friendships she made with various pilots and soldiers from Charlotte. These letters and mementos humanize the brave soldiers and pilots and will give you a newfound respect for them.

North Carolina in the First World War

The second exhibit is titled North Carolina in the First World War. It’s located in the Verona Joyner Langford NC Collection exhibit space. You will find a lot of artifacts in this exhibit, but there are a couple of things that stand out. First, there is a war memorial created for the men of Pitt County. This memorial hits close to home, and it is humbling to see in person. Then, there are artifacts that belonged to Pvt. George Gordon Bailey. He was from Everetts, North Carolina, and you will love taking a look inside of his life. It’s so easy to feel removed from the conflicts that take place, but when you see artifacts from someone who served, it takes that barrier down. That’s especially true when the person who served lived so close to your own home.

Times were hard during the Great War. Fortunately, they are much easier now. One huge improvement you’ll notice has to do with transportation.
