How To Fix Cracking Paint On Cars

car paint damage from car accident

So, maybe your car isn’t brand new. Maybe you bought it used, accidentally sideswiped something, or you’ve just been driving the same lovable car since the 90s. No matter how it happened, the paint on your car is chipping and you want to get it fixed. The good news is, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to fix the chipped or peeling paint off your vehicle. With a few simple steps, you’ll be able to repair your car’s peeling paint in no time.

Supplies You Will Need

Sometimes, when the paint from a vehicle starts to chip away, your primer also stops working. This often results in rust damage which doesn’t look very pretty. There is no need to panic, though. Head to your nearest auto-supply store to pick up a few items you’ll need to fix your car. You’ll need an aerosol spray can of factory-matched paint code, an aerosol primer that matches the car color, a clear coat, a sandpaper assortment package, and a prep solvent. All of these supplies should cost you less than 50 dollars, which is a lot less than getting it done for you!

Getting Started

Before you start sanding, you’ll want to try and peel away as much loose paint as possible. Use compressed air and a bath towel for help. Next, you can start sanding. Use the 180 grit, coarse sandpaper first to scuff the affected area and the surrounding paint. Make sure when you are finished sanding you remove all of the dirt and dust off the area being painted with a damp cloth.

Once the area has been prepped, lay down a thick coat of primer. After the primer dries, sand it down with 600 grit sandpaper. Then, lay four coats of paint, waiting 10 minutes between each coat. Sand the area with 1500 grit sandpaper after the paint has completely dried. To finish off, apply a clear coat and your car will be as good as new!
